In Chicago!

Wow! I still cannot believe that we have been in Chicago for about two months already! Work has been really hectic, but I thought it will be nice to write something and keep everyone updated about our first two months in Chicago. I officially start work in the University of Chicago on June 1st, but I had to report to the HR department, get my ID cards and say hi to everyone in the new lab on May 10th, 2016. The University of Chicago campus is very large, and there is a distinct mix of historic and modern high tech buildings. Most of the art classes are held in older buildings with more "character", while pre-Med students are commonly found in the modern buildings.

Our apartment is just about 15 mins walk from my work place. Therefore, it is very nice to be able to get out of the home minutes before work, and not have to take the public transport or get trapped in the crazy Chicago traffic.

Before I started working in the University, besides driving around Chicago getting used furnitures (from Craigslist), and every little thing the apartment needs, we also got the chance to wander around Chicago downtown. It is definitely a big city...lots of tall buildings, big sidewalks, lots of people and cars. It is definitely a big change from living on Waiheke (even Auckland).

As I mentioned above, I officially start work on June 1st. I walked into my office in the morning the day I officially start, and there are a few packages on my table waiting for me! My PI's secretary came in to say hi, and mentioned to me that all my laptop accessories are here, but my laptop would be coming in the afternoon! I was pleasantly surprised... well then... it is sure nice to have new toys to play with.... After lunch, my new Macbook Pro arrived!.. and over the next few days, other "toys" came in - a huge monitor (good for my eyesight!) and a noise-cancelling headphone....

Well, I better work hard and produce some good results and great papers - these benefits and the great view from the office is not going to be free!

Finally got to the end of the month, and I got my pay! I celebrated it with a box of Twinkies :) I know this post is lacking in a lot of details but I can only spend so much time writing the blog. I promised to write a bit more in weeks to come.
