Grand Cayman Diving

It has been a long time since Hannah and I did some "leisure, non-stressful, warm water" dives in the ocean. In fact, according to our record, the last time we dove in warm waters of Caribbean was on Hannah's 21st birthday. Two years ago, we had planned for this trip to Grand Cayman Island, but was cancelled last minute (we were literally ready to board the plane from Florida to Grand Cayman!) due to a storm that caused some damage to the resort that we were staying. After postponing and anticipating eagerly for a whole year, we are finally here to celebrate our 13th year wedding anniversary- Grand Cayman.

We are staying and diving with Living The Dream Divers (https://www.livingthedreamdivers.com/). It is such a welcoming weather, with the warmth and sunshine, coming from the frigid winter in Kansas. We are staying in the Angel Fish Cabana, which is a one-bedroom apartment, with a kitchen, living room, balcony and even an outdoor bath. There is also a saltwater pool for the residents to use, but most of our time were spent diving in the ocean!

Even through transport is provided to bring us to and from the dive shop/ boat, we chose to rent a car the whole time we are in Grand Cayman. This allowed us to go and visit other places during our surface intervals, as well as means to get around the island if we need to buy any groceries. We rented a SUV, while in hindsight, we could have rented a cheaper, smaller car.

When we first checked into the resort, Christian welcomed us with two cold beer. Christian has been working with Living The Dreams for a long time, and is a very funny character. He is also a very accomplished diver, and has been featured in a Suunto advertisement alongside some world famous divers. Hannah and I took no time to get settled in, and started enjoying our beer in the sunshine, eager to start our vacation.

We went to Macabuca (https://www.crackedconch.com.ky/macabuca) for dinner. that evening It is a short 15 mins walk from the resort, and it was highly recommended by Christian. It is a very chilled place, next to the ocean. On Mondays, they have all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet for $22. It is definitely a steal as there is a wide spread of food, from jerked chicken to fish/seafood. I highly recommend this place, especially not to miss the Monday's BBQ Buffet.

After dinner, we went back to the room, and started packing our gear for tomorrow's diving! We are super excited about looking at colorful fishes and corals, while enjoying the warm Caribbean waters! First impression of the diving operation - SUPERB! From the pick-up early in the morning to the end of the dives for that day, we are spoiled! We did not need to carry our own gear, we did not need to change tanks in-between dives, we did not need to wash down our gear after dives, we did not need to do the weird walk to the waters (across the boat) with the heavy tank on our back - all were taken care of! We just need to walk to the edge of the boat, put on our mask and fins, and the crew brings our BCD and tank to us, and help us put it on!!!!! Hannah and I have only heard of this service, but have NEVER experience this.

First day diving wasn't a great experience for Hannah! She always have challenges with equalizing during her decent, especially on the first few dives. To make things worse, her purge valve on her BCD CAME OFF, and flooded her BCD. We have to call the first dive, and she has to use the crew's back-up BCD for the second dive for the first day! After the first day of diving, we drove around the island, hoping to find a place where they can repair her BCD, but we didn't have any luck. Luckily, a diver from Indepth ( Watersports (https://indepthwatersports.com/) was able to lend us his spare BCD. The day was saved!

We dove for 4 days (8 dives), saw a lo of sea-life (fishes, shrimps, turtles, barracudas etc), healthy corals. However,  my tummy is not feeling good throughout the 4 days, and I feel as if I am suffering from acid reflux on the second dives - Note to self: need to go consult a gastroenterologist.

On Wednesday (Jan 15) evening, we went to Tukka West Restaurant and Bar (https://west.tukka.ky/) for dinner and drinks. The setting was casual, the food was good (the seafood is definitely very fresh!), and drinks are decent as well. It is quite a drive (almost 30 mins) from the resort, but it is away from the main tourist place (7-mile beach), and thus it is definitely the place to go to to enjoy some peace and quiet, while savoring good food.

On Thursday (Jan 16), we planned for a night shore dive (after our morning boat diving). There are tons of shore diving around Grand Cayman Island, but one that intrigue us is the shore dive from Macabuca - to do a shore diving from a bar? This is the first time 😆 Hannah's plan was to enter the water just before sunset to oriented ourselves in the water, and be able to navigate back to the shore when it is dark. We rented tanks and geared up at Indepth (which is next to macabuca), took pics of ourselves for proof of diving from the bar, and were in the water at 5.15pm. The dive was really nice, with tons of unique structure, corals and fishes. However, the sunset took VERY long, and we were back on the surface even before it got really dark. After talking to a couple of divers who regularly dove this site, we could have waited for another 45 mins more before entering the water. However, the experience of gearing up in scuba gear, walking pass a bar, in and out of the water, while staring by tons of people is definitely an unforgettable experience. And of course, having dinner and a drink immediately after the short dive is the cherry on the cake.

After the last day of diving on Friday (Jan 17), we went to Calypso Grill (https://www.calypsogrillcayman.com/) for our anniversary dinner. Calypso Grill is just located next to the Tukka West Restaurant, and is an award winning restaurant. The setting is very classy, very beautiful. and the food is excellent! We shared a bottle of NZ wine, and reminisced our past 13 years of marriage life together. Again, if you are in Grand Cayman, do not miss this place - need to make a reservation because it is almost always busy, and don't forget their famous Calypso sticky toffee pudding.

We are leaving on Sat (Jan 18), but have a whole morning before our flight. We drove (approximately 1 hour) to Queen Elizabeth II Royal Botanic Park (https://www.botanic-park.ky/?doing_wp_cron=1738856225.4871890544891357421875). It was warm and humid on this day, but we walked around the park, enjoying the different flora, and also paid a quick visit to say hello to the Blue Iguanas in the Blue Iguana Conversation (within the Botanical Park).

Overall cost for this trip :
- Lodging (for 5 nights): ~$1500
- Diving (for 4 days / 8 dives for 2 people): ~$900

Dive sites that we dove
  1. In between
  2. Wild life
  3. Eagle's nest
  4. Oro Verde/ Paradise reef
  5. Neptune's wall
  6. Lone star reef
  7. Turtle reef (shore dive)
  8. Big tunnels (OUR FAVORITE SITE!!!)
  9. Bonnie's arch
We could have save quite a bit of money if we buy groceries and cook, but hey, it's our anniversary and vacation :)

Diving Haigh Quarry

We went diving on Sunday (07/16/2017)! Haigh Quarry was holding a Jim Haigh Memorial Dive event, and we decided it would be a great opportunity for us to test out our gear. It had been nearly a year since we last dove, and we wanted to make sure everything is in working order before we jump into Lake Michigan to visit the wrecks :) And it is good that we did because there are definitely a couple of things that need to be service.

Haigh Quarry is also known as the Caribbean of the Midwest :) The owners of the Quarry have purposefully sank some items (such as fire engine, boat, small plane etc) for divers to enjoy. The first dive we visited the fire engine (or at least we think). The visibility was horrible (less than 3 feet), and it was VERY COLD! My computer registered 8 degC at the bottom (12 meters). Hannah and I were not ready for this cold water diving, and we suffered a bit of "ice-cream headache". The dive didn't last long.. 10mins :)

We thought maybe the visibility and temperature would be nicer at the second site. We swam over to the second buoy, and started out decent down the line. At around 6 meters, there was a "hand" that was tied to the decent line :), and passing through the thermocline at around 8 meters, we could see that we were descending onto a small boat! We did a swim around the boat, went into the cabin and out through the front. All the windows were open making it safe for divers to do a easy swim-through. Again, I didn't last long - I was cold, and my hands were freezing (I should have wore my gloves :/)...

Finally, after two dives, we were ready for some food. A nice food truck "Big John" was there selling BBQ items! We enjoyed our order - "Comeback pork with fries" and "Burnt tips"  very much after all the exertion.

Hannah said we should go back to the Quarry again, and this time, we would just stay next to the wall and swim around the quarry... Until next time.

Northland dive

This past 2 weeks have been a bit crazy, and it is not getting any easier next week either with the "end of semester marking craze" just around the corner! Thus, I have all the "excuses" to miss 2 weeks of Capture your 365 photo challenge :P.

Anyway, Hannah and I were to determined to squeeze in a day of diving in between all this craziness. Especially, we have not been diving together for so long, and we have not done any stage diving since our technical diving course 2 years ago! Thus, off to Northland Dive we went. Our neighbour, Corin took great care of the dogs while we were away for the day.

We had two fantastic dives on the Canterbury. The visibility was not very good, and the water was very green. This is because there is an algae bloom from the slight increase in water temperature as the season changes. We had the chance to take a few photos with the new (used) camera and underwater housing. Honestly, the photos looks horrible because I am still trying to get used to the functions etc. So bear with me with the crappy photos, but I am sure I will improve overtime :)

Earth Day celebration - sorta

This week is the 2nd week in the mid-semester break. We spend the whole of last week marking students mid-term test. Most of the tutors who were marking were complaining that the University cut the pay they gave us for marking; how bad students answers were etc. However, it was extra cash, and we NEVER turn down some decent money for decent work.

Today, we finished some marking for our labs, and I had done some analysis for my data. So we decided to go for a shore dive at our local spot - Enclosure Bay. It's free, it's there, and the "vacation people" are back home and the bay is not so crowded. The high tide was at 12.35pm, so we geared up, and was at the Bay at around 12.45pm. Maybe it was because we were a bit late, and the tide was already starting to go back out, or maybe it was the amount of rain we got the last couple of days... the visibility wasn't that great. However, we got about 45mins of bottom time, saw a couple of fishes, lots of triple-finned fishes, a clown nudibranch, lots of inverts etc.

And on the way back home, Hannah reminded me that we should take a picture so that we can remember our 1st dive in Enclosure Bay in year 2014. BTW, Happy Earth Day, and there is no better way to celebrate it than going diving :)

End of field experiment (winter)

Today is the last day in NMMBA. I am leaving for Taipei tomorrow to continue the lab work. Yesterday was the last day of my tank experiment, and today is the last day of the field experiment (winter). I would still have to conduct the same field experiment again in the summer (June 2014) to compare the results. After all the hard work in the water, Wei-Jie (dive guide) snapped a few photographs of me working underwater (or rather pretending to work underwater :) ...

Taiwanese motion sickness medicine

For those you know me, you would know that I get motion sickness easily! That's one of the reason why I love cave diving so much... no gruesome boat rides! Anyway, I have always been relying on a motion sickness pill from US - a brand call Triptone. However, Triptone is rather expensive, and shipping from US is not cheap either.

After seeing me throwing up last week, one of my Taiwanese colleagues offered me a bottle of Taiwanese motion sickness drink! It is a small bottle (15mL), and you are supposed to drink the whole bottle an hour before the dive. Well, it works! And guess what, I went out and bought 10 bottles - and it costs only NZD7.50 !....

Taiwan research trip June 2013 - location scouting

Today, I went diving at the nuclear plant water intake point with the research assistants from NMMBA. The purpose of this dive is to determine if it is a good field location for my experiment end of this year. According to the research scientists from NMMBA, the water flow here is higher than any place around the bay because the nuclear plant is siphoning the water into the plant for cooling purposes. Thus, it creates an artificial high flow environment! The underwater environment is supposedly to be the best around the bay as well because the public are not allowed in here! It is only restricted to certain researchers (in which one of the researchers happen to be my collaborator!).

The only thing I need to worry about - AVOID being pulled into the water intake of the nuclear plant!

Water temperature - 29deg C
Visibility - 20m
Depth - 5 to 10m

Nudibranch
Potential "victim" for experiment!
Healthy corals
