Taiwan research trip June 2013... arrival in Kenting

Finally, we arrived in Kenting at around 8pm at night! It was supposed to be an easy ride on the bullet train which takes about 3 hours. Instead, we were kicked out because we were carrying the nitrogen container (even though it was empty). (For my friend, Justine) We are going to use the liquid nitrogen to preserve the coral tissues for DNA and RNA extraction later on. It would probably be ok in just -20deg C (ice) if we are only interested in DNA, but since we want to extract RNA (which breaks down easier), keeping it in liquid nitrogen is a safer method of transportation. Thus, we ended up travelling on the slow train, which we were still nervous that they would not allow us to broad the train. We "disguised" the liquid nitrogen can with raincoat and a sling bag to get though the gate! Six hours later, we arrived in Kenting.

The place we are staying is MUCH better than the flat in Taipei. I will try to put up photos of the place in a couple of days. It is a short ride (5 mins) on the bicycle from NMMBA (National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium) which I will be conducting my experiment. Tomorrow, the madness begins!
