Road trip Day 4 - Booms Flat Campsite, Coromandel Forest Park

(Sorry..no cell service for the past 3 days!)

The rain cleared today! It was cloudy with sun the occasionally peeping out behind the clouds. It is Easter weekend, and people are starting to show up to the campsite. We decided to stay another day at the Coromandel Forest Park, but we will be moving to another campsite, Booms Flat. We head out to the visitor’s centre first to check out what are the hiking tracks that allow dogs on them, while at the same time fill up our container with filtered drinking water. After that, we took a short 10 mins walk to check out a replica of dam. It was very neat to learn about the history of this place! During the peak logging period, thousands of kauri trees were cut down. The dam would be closed, allowing the water in the streams to rise and carry the logs downstream. As the logs reached their destination, the dam gates will be opened and all the logs will accumulate at the Booms Flat. The logs will collided with each other making huge “booms”, thus the name “Booms Flat”.

We hiked a number of trails with the dogs today, including Edward’s Lookout. We hiked up to the top of this small lookout and enjoyed the view of the valley. We can literally see the Coromandel Forest Park being surrounded by  mountains on all sides! It is really neat!

By the end of the day, Hannah and the dogs are tired from the all day walking! Dinner was a simple pasta meal, with a small glass of scotch to accompany it. Good night :)
