Road trip day 5 - Rerewhakaaitu Campsite, Rotorua

The night at Booms Flat was quite interesting! It rained very heavily last night, and I woke up in the middle of the night, finding Hannah looking for something in the van. She was looking for a container because the van was leaking! There was rain dripping (very small amount, don’t be alarmed! :) ) through the back door of the van. We had plans to replace the back door along this trip because there are some rust, and we think the van would fetch a better price after we replace the door.

We survived the night and in the morning, we headed back to Dickey’s Flat because Hannah wanted to the loop hiking track at Karangahake Gorge.  The place was full of cars and campers, and we had to park along the unpaved road. Got everything sorted out asap and we were on our way! It was a 4-hour round loop around the Gorge. The track was a bit muddy, and I was on my sanders because I had packed my tracking boots in the checked in luggages (silly me!). It was an interesting track with water fall, beautiful steep drops, two bridges. The most interesting part of the track was at the end - we had to go through a fast flowing river (up to our shins), and it was very muddy for about the last km of the track! Hannah and I slipped a couple of times! We made it back to the van just in time when the rain started pouring down again!

We decided to start driving towards the South, and not to join the crowd at Dickey’s Flat. We headed for Rotorua, which was about 2 hours drive. At around Taupo, we drove into a HUGE major downpour and the visibility on the road dropped tremendously! I drove slowly (about 20km/h) out of the rain, and very soon after we caught scent of the distinct smell of Rotorua! We found a beautiful campsite next to the lake, made camp, had a couple of beer, and made pasta for dinner.
